GEGAC, Bairnsdale

The Gippsland and East Gippsland Aboriginal Co-operative (GEGAC) has a newly created position for a full-time GP (6-10 sessions per week). There are no hospital affiliations and no procedural skills are needed. An interest in Aboriginal health is essential and previous experience would be viewed highly. There are no after hours on-call requirements.

The practice will provide support with an orientation and induction into the practice and training in cultural and Aboriginal health issues. Both cultural and clinical ongoing mentorship is provided.

The Package

The successful GP will be engaged as an employee on an initial contract of one year to eighteen months. The draft contract offers an annual remuneration of between $100K and $150K and includes 4 weeks annual leave, 5-10 days sick leave, long service leave, 2 weeks study leave and 9% superannuation. Paid indemnity insurance and a relocation expense subsidy are included.

Practice Profile

GEGAC provides primary health care services such as dental, childrens’, elders’, HACC and disability support. Community services include drug and alcohol and youth accommodation services and a Koori offenders mentoring support initiative. The Children Youth and Family Services Unit offers broad ranging programmes to support the community. In addition,GEGAC is charged with preserving the history, culture and heritage of the Gunai/Kurnai people of East Gippsland.

The Medical Centre at GEGAC is an accredited, computerised, teaching practice with two consulting rooms and a treatment room. Currently five part-time GPs are supported by a practice manager, practice nurses and Aboriginal health workers. Specialist and allied health services available to the practice include physiotherapy, podiatry and a diabetes educator.

Practice hours are Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm with no after hours on-call commitments. Patient health issues that particularly impact the practice are drug and alcohol, aged care and child and maternity related.

The Bairnsdale Regional Health Service Hospital has 98 acute beds covering medicine, surgery, obstetrics, paediatrics, coronary care and a 14 bed rehabilitation unit. Radiology, pathology CT, accident and emergency services and other paramedical services are offered. Extensive specialist inpatient and outpatient services across a wide variety of disciplines are available. There are 100 nursing home beds, a dementia hostel and other aged care facilities.
