Paynesville
Paynesville, known as the ‘Boating Capital of Victoria”, is a popular tourist resort, 16km from Bairnsdale on the McMillan Straits. Paynesville is surrounded by Lake Wellington and Lake Victoria to the west and Lake King to the east. The McMillan Straits separate it from Raymond Island, home of a large koala population. The town is unique in that it boasts a network of man-made canals, which provide easy access to the lakes. Fish by boat on the peaceful lakes, from the numerous jetties, lake and ocean beaches or along the tranquil Mitchell River. Paynesville is famous for the ‘Silt Jetties’, which extend almost 8 kms into Lake King from the cliffs at Eagle Point. The lakes offer yachting, boating, fishing, windsurfing, jet skiing and swimming.
