About EGPHA
East Gippsland Primary Health Alliance
The East Gippsland Division of General Practice has proudly supported and represented General Practitioners since 1993, implementing projects to assist doctors in many aspects of their business. We have recently changed our name to the East Gippsland Primary Health Alliance (EGPHA), signifying our goal to better serve not only GP practices, but all local primary health services and providers in the region.
The new EGPHA opens the door of membership to a broader multi-disciplinary team including specialists, allied health professionals, nurses, practice managers, paramedics and other stakeholders associated with primary care. This will provide an opportunity for local partnership across the primary health sector, creating a team-based approach to achieve better health outcomes for our communities and improve working relationships.
Our change of name and constitution also places us at the forefront of health reform in Gippsland. Our driving force is a determination to keep the organisation local. Become a member and strengthen the EGPHA’s efforts to keep local clinicians representing and serving local communities.
About Us
East Gippsland Primary Health Alliance covers a vast and diverse area of eastern Victoria. Our region extends from Rosedale and Sale to the New South Wales border, encompassing East Gippsland and Wellington Shires. The district is rural and remote, with a population of more than 75,000 in a region covering approximately 32,000km2, of which 80 per cent is public land. It is a geographically diverse region of coastal plains, river valleys, foothills, tablelands and mountains.
Currently this area is serviced by 78 General Practitioners and 18 Registrars who deliver primary medical care from 29 General Practice locations. The diversity of practice sites includes full time group practices, solo practices, Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHO), Fulham Correctly Centre, East Sale RAAF Base and outreach practices in rural and remote areas. Many of the GPs are active in supporting training and education of Interns, Registrars and medical students. Most have Visiting Medical Officer (VMO) status at their local hospital and provide general practice services to 16 Residential Aged Care Facilities (RACFs).
We represent a region with the third highest proportion of Indigenous population in Victoria. EGPHA is committed to reducing the health inequalities experienced by our Indigenous communities, which make up 3.1 per cent of the East Gippsland and 1.1 per cent of the Wellington Shire’s populations.
The Primary Health Alliance supports practices in the towns of Mallacoota, Orbost, Lakes Entrance, Nowa Nowa, Bairnsdale, Metung, Paynesville, Omeo, Sale, Maffra, Heyfield, Loch Sport and Rosedale.
